Part of Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani's diary entry on Wednesday, February 16, 2002

  Ayatollah Montazeri was transferred to Kamkar Hospital [Qom] due to heart trouble the night before and is hospitalized.  Last night, I talked to the leader about greeting Mr. Montazeri;  They disagreed.  They are saddened by the actions and statements and interviews with foreign counter-revolutionaries and thanks to Ahmad, his son, from Radio [Sadai] of America.  Mr. [Abbas Ali] Alizadeh, the Chief Justice of Tehran, said yesterday in Qom that the lifting of his detention is conditional on refraining from wrong political actions.  The Ministry of Information has also told the opposition political groups to refrain from contacting them.  Ayatollah Montazeri also says that they did not accept the condition.

 The open letter of engineer [Ezzatullah] Sahabi, [national religious activist] to the heads of the three powers and oppression at the hands of the interrogators and the court, and the reaction of Mr. [Mahdi] Karroubi, [Majlis Speaker], and [Syed Mohammad] Khatami, [President] and Mr. Karrobi's letter to Mr. [Syed Mahmoud] Hashemi Shahroudi, [Chairman of the Judiciary] and their answers are also taken into consideration.  Political circles are and continue.  156 other national-religious people have published an open letter after him.  The Revolutionary Court has also responded and threatened to execute the rulings and speed up the issuing of the final verdict.
