Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – September 2, 1984

Early in the morning, I went to the president's office and we discussed with him about the two plans of Sayad and Mohsen Rezaei. We accepted Mr. Rezaei's plan and Sayad's [plan] was found to be impractical. Regarding the Ministry of Defense and the Joint Staff and the Commander of the Naval Forces and the Imam's representative in the Supreme Council of Defense, a decision was also made. We decided to discuss it with the imam. We also discussed a little about the [Islamic Republic] party; Mr. [Ayatollah] Khamenei complained about my lack of attention to the party, I said that side games in the party are a source of discouragement, the party must act correctly.

I went to my office and made an appointment until 2 pm. Capt. Behzadpour, the fired Gendarmerie officer, came. He wanted help to [find] a job; I referred to the Minister of Interior. Messrs. [Gholamabas] Zairi and [Hossein] Mahlouji [of the parliament workers] came; For the work of the parliament and providing funds for the purchase of representatives' cars and the provision of houses for the representatives and the problem of the former representatives not evacuating the houses of the representatives.

Mr. [Hossein] Nili, Minister of Mines [and Metals], came and was upset that Ayatollah Montazeri did not accept the meeting and asked for help. He gave a report on the state of the mines and was satisfied. He consulted about the quality of dealing with Islamic associations - which oppose him. [Mr. Amir Mir] representative of Zahedan came. He complained about the continued imprisonment of Sistani in Zahedan. He asked for help to go to Zahedan because he was afraid of the revolution prosecutor's office.

Mr. Farshad Momeni was upset with the one-dimensionalization of the [Islamic Republic] party and said that some people were upset and the radicals objected to the Imam's recent order regarding the participation of the private sector in foreign trade and production. Mr. [Hasan] Habibi, Minister of Justice, is satisfied with the understanding with the Judicial Council and the progress of the work. The Assyrian representative said about the possibility of an agreement with the Ministry of Education and Parrosh in the educational program of the minorities. He asked for help to forgive his outstanding loan interest; Executive has been issued. In the evening, Mr. Sadatian, Abbasi and Mohajeri - the staff of my office - discussed their differences; I recommended a compromise.

I participated in the [Central] Council of the [Islamic Republic] Party. The bad financial situation of the party was discussed, and Mr. [Jalaluddin] Farsi's speech was considered divisive in the group of party members. At night, we discussed with Mr. [Ayatollah] Khamenei and Mr. Tabasi about the one-dimensionalization of the party and we decided to continue the discussion. The Minister of Commerce came and consulted about the rice plan. Mr. [Ayatollah] Khamenei and I were of the opinion that the government should give one kilo of rice per month to each member of each family and that the private sector should be free to buy domestic rice.
