Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – September 2, 1982

We had a public session and discussed the bill to establish the Ministry of Health and Treatment. A proposal from the representatives was submitted regarding the repeal of all laws contrary to Islam, but since it could potentially bring all the banks to a halt, we made a great effort to avoid announcing it—because of the need to cover the government's revenue shortfall through the banking system—and instead a more moderate proposal was introduced with double urgency.

During the recess, I spoke to the families of the parliamentary security staff, and at noon I spoke to physical education teachers. Mr. [Mohammad] Abaei [Khorasani] and [Mohammad] Jafari [representative of Langarud] came and expressed concern about the positions of certain people in Qom and sought a solution. People from the military industries and aircraft manufacturing also came and complained about the management. In the afternoon, the cultural attachés of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance came, and I spoke to them. We had a meeting with the Cultural Revolution Headquarters, the Prime Minister, and the President. Regarding their disagreements with the Minister of Science, we reached no conclusion, and we left it to them to handle. At night, we had a meeting with a group of clerics. Mr. [Abdolmajid] Moadi Khah spoke. It was effective. They were guests of Parliament for dinner. I returned home at eleven-thirty.
