Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – September 14, 1982

I studied at home until eight o'clock. A report had arrived from an officer in the Air Force about the misconduct of the Air Force Intelligence and Guidance units and the infiltration of the Mojahedin-e Khalq, which is important and must be investigated. At nine o'clock, I met with a group of Shiites from abroad at the Parliament. They had proposals for energizing Islamic propaganda.

The families of three Committee martyrs—who had been abducted, tortured, and martyred by the Mojahedin-e Khalq—came. I offered them my condolences, and gifts were prepared for the children and the women. The Deputy Minister of Posts and Telegraphs came. He had some points about Islamic Azad University, which were referred to Mr. [Abdollah] Jasbi. The Japanese ambassador came. I conveyed the officials' complaints that he was hindering the expansion of relations. He had nothing important to say. I gave an interview to television on the anniversary of the martyrdom of Mr. [Seyyed Abdolkarim] Hashemi Nejad. Iran's chargé d'affaires in Somalia came; I advised him to deal with the Somalis with tolerance. Because of poverty and pressure from Ethiopia's communist regime, they have been driven toward the West. The families of the martyrs of Babolsar came, and I gave them a speech and offered my condolences.

In the afternoon, a group of university professors came. Dr. [Abolqasem] Gorji, [Seyyed Jafar] Shahidi, Mohammadi, and others complained about extremism and the dismissal of several veteran professors. It was decided that we would pursue the matter. Mr. [Mohammad] Golzari from the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults came. Together with Mr. Abbas Tabatabaei, they had some points about educational affairs.

In the afternoon, I went to meet Mr. Khamenei. We held a session to review the candidates for the Assembly of Experts once again. It was decided that both he and I would be involved. With the presence of Messrs. [Mohammad Reza] Mahdavi Kani, Mousavi Ardebili, and [Fazlollah] Mahallati, we also discussed other issues.

Mr. Navab, our ambassador to Germany, came and complained that they wanted to replace him through pressure. I reassured him and said that he could serve elsewhere without trouble, but he preferred to stay for a few more months so that the ongoing work would not be disrupted. Late at night, I came home. Faezeh had made ashkeneh.
