Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – September 11, 1991

[Mr. Xavier Pérez de Couillar], the Secretary General of the United Nations and his companions came to meet. We negotiated some in an official public meeting and some in a private meeting. They talked about the implementation of Resolution 598 and helping to free the hostages. In a private meeting, he made it clear that he believes that Iraq is responsible for the war and will give an opinion by October.

In the evening, Mr. Reza Hashemian [Director General of Environment of Kerman Province] came and requested for the establishment of the Faculty of Environment. In the meeting of the government board, there was a discussion about the protection and review of the promises and the fulfillment of the promises of the members of the government.

At dinner, the Secretary General of the United Nations and his companions were my guests. We had informal talks about the future of the Soviet Union and various issues. At the dinner table, they informed him that Israel had released a group of Lebanese prisoners. He was very happy. It was decided to pursue the release of the hostages and the Lebanese. It was a friendly meeting.

I came home at night. Because of the use of fatty foods in the dinner, I slept with discomfort at night.
