Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – November 7, 1982

I went to Parliament early in the morning. They reported that the third phase of Operation Muharram had been carried out the previous night, with three hundred square kilometers of Iraqi territory and several oil production units and the Zubeidat township captured, one thousand five hundred Iraqi soldiers taken prisoner, and abundant spoils seized, and that the agenda was the transfer of the Army's development projects from the Ministry of Housing to the Army, which was not approved.

At noon I had a televised interview with domestic and foreign reporters. In the afternoon I attended the representatives' session to review the bills. The three new ministers, Messrs. [Seyyed Mohammad] Khatami, [Javad] Ejei and [Mohsen] Rafiqdoust, who had been introduced to Parliament today, were under discussion. Some were opposed, and Mr. [Abbasali] Akhtari [representative of Mashhad] also complained that Parliament was voting under the influence of my words. I too criticized this agitation and called for the representatives' intellectual independence.

I met with Mr. Taheri Gorgani. He complained about Mr. [Seyyed Kazem] Nourmofidi and was dissatisfied with us for not looking into the matter. I also criticized the disagreements among the clergy of Gorgan. A group of Hezbollahis from the Ministry of Health came and defended their work. I attended the Central Council meeting of the party. The discussion concerned the party's duties and the parliamentary by-elections. I came to my office and slept in Parliament.
