Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – November 1, 1982

After the prayer, I studied until eight-thirty. Then I attended the Economic and Financial Affairs Commission. The government's contracts with Turkey, Pakistan, and Syria were on the agenda. Since the government had implemented them before Parliament's approval, some were saying that we should leave the matter unaddressed, but it was decided that the issue would be discussed and voted on and the result reported to Parliament.

At eleven, I met with officials of the Jihad and revolutionary and executive forces of Gorgan. They were upset about the disagreement between Messrs. [Seyyed Kazem] Nourmofidi and Taheri and spoke of the problems arising from the people's confrontations with Mr. [Mohammad] Mohammadi, a member of Parliament. I advised them and called on them to unite and promised to try to resolve the problems.

Dr. [Hadi] Manafi came and sought help in eliminating the adverse effects of the disagreement between the two hardline and conservative factions in the government. In the afternoon, I met with the seven-member committees for the distribution of agricultural lands, thanked them for their efforts, and advised them to observe the law and moderation.  

At night, we had the Defense Council. We discussed the demands of the Iraqi prisoners of war, the protection and defense of Kharg Island, and future operations, and afterward I gave an interview.  

Mr. [Ali] Shamkhani informed me that tonight we would have an operation from Fakkeh to Dehloran.  Late at night, I went to Parliament. Before going to sleep, Mr. [Mohsen] Rezaei called from Qaim Headquarters and informed me that the operation had begun at ten p.m. and was progressing well. It is raining.
