Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – May 5, 1992

To participate in the Hajj Congress, we went to Imam's Shrine by helicopter. Mr. [Mohammed Mohammadi] Ray Shahri, [representative of the legal guardian and supervisor of Iranian pilgrims] said welcome and I spoke; I drew the audience's attention to observing all aspects of Hajj and avoiding one-dimensionality.

I came to my office. I did the work. Mr. Seyyed Mohammad Hashemi, the head of financial affairs of the Imam shrine, came. He gave a report on the budgets, income and expenses and asked for help to complete the work. He also gave a report on the work of the Martyr Foundation's Cultural Vice-Chancellor and analyzed the dissatisfaction of the martyrs' families. He said that some of the members of the clerical assembly and the left wing are dissatisfied with the extreme positions of their friends.

Dr. [Ali Akbar] Velaiti, [Minister of Foreign Affairs] and Mr. [Alauddin] Boroujerdi, [Deputy Asia and Pacific Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs], [Sidersol] Mousavi, [Reza] Najafi and Mehdizadeh came. Mehdizadeh and Najafi reported their trip to Afghanistan. First, they went to Mazar-e Sharif and negotiated with the commanders of the northern front - Shiites and Persian speakers - and came to Kabul through the land road and passing through the Hekmatyar area. They have seen the situation of the northern provinces under the territory of the northern front as satisfactory, prosperous and safe; Green and dates, full of water and cultivation, united and at the same time dissatisfied with the single-minded actions of Ahmad Shah Masoud, who was their ally and went to Kabul without coordination and built a council of 51 people.

In Kabul, they negotiated with Ahmad Shah Massoud to establish an understanding with the northern front, but they did not succeed. They found Masoud proud. It was decided to submit a report to the Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council to determine Iran's position. Mr. [Mohsen] Nourbakhsh, [Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance], [Masoud Roghani] Zanjani, [Head of the Program and Budget Organization] and [Gholamreza] Aghazadeh, [Minister of Oil] came. They offered to increase the price of petroleum products, which I did not accept.

In the evening, the Cultural Revolution Council had a meeting. About the conditional students of Sharif University of Technology, a decision was made based on the report of the council's monitoring board. I did the work until nine o'clock at night. We have prepared the itinerary for the guests of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

I arrived home at half past nine. In the news, the intensification of the civil war in Afghanistan between the interim government and Hekmatyar's Islamic Party, the intensification of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Serbs, the provision of peace in Los Angeles, the severity of disputes in Tajikistan, and the peak of strikes in [West] Germany are of interest.
