Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – May 15, 1983

I went to the Majlis early in the morning. One hour before the open session, I took care of the administrative matters. I signed the decrees and sent the resolutions to the Guardian Council and the executive branch. In the open session, the bill [establishing the Ministry of] Intelligence was on the agenda. We made good progress. Temporarily, the Revolutionary Guards were authorized to conduct intelligence work until the Ministry of Intelligence announced its readiness. It was approved that intelligence personnel could not be members of any political party.

At noon, I met with one of the families of a martyr from Bangalore, India, who serve the Revolution and had also guaranteed the release of the detained students. I encouraged him. Mr. [Fazlollah] Salavati and Mr. [Ahmad] Salek, representatives from Isfahan, came and said that the case of Seyyed Mehdi Hashemi in the murder of Shamsabadi would be brought before the Isfahan court on May 21 and that the trial was supposed to be secret. They thought that keeping the trial secret was intended to cover things up and acquit him; they were worried. One of the people from the Liberation Movements Unit also came and said he had information and experience that were currently not being used because the situation was unclear. I told him to give it to the Supreme Defense Council. In the afternoon, I came home and rested and studied.

Mr. [Hamid] Ziyarti came. Recently, at the Imam's order, he has become responsible for the Center for Documents of the Islamic Revolution. The Imam has said that he should remove Hojjatieh members. He said that the work would come to a standstill and that we should find people beforehand. An intermediary came and said that the president of South Korea was willing to unofficially provide us with parts for American weapons. It was decided that I would follow up. Our relations had previously become strained because of the refusal to provide weapons.
