Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – March 21, 1982

I came downstairs at two in the morning to watch the New Year's ceremony on television. I woke up the children, who had fallen asleep in front of the TV. Before the New Year, Ayatollah Montazeri's speech was broadcast. Then the messages of the Imam, the President, the Head of the Supreme Court, the Speaker of the Majlis, and the Prime Minister, and a anthem.

In the morning, after prayers and breakfast, Efat, Fati, Mehdi, and Yaser went to the airport to go to Libya; they have been invited with a group of friends for the anniversary of the Libyan revolution. I started studying; I was reading a report on the commemoration ceremony for the anniversary of the revolution in Paris and several other cities in France, and the confrontation with the counter-revolutionaries. My brother Mohammad came and talked about the situation at the broadcasting organization.

I went to his residence to pay homage to the Imam. [Members of] the government, the Guardian Council, the [Supreme] Judicial Council, and representatives of the Majlis and... were also there.

Husseiniyeh was full of people. First, the President offered New Year's greetings to the Imam. Then the Imam spoke, and in his remarks he admonished Ayatollah Golpayegani and others who have unrealistic expectations of the Islamic Republic. We stayed at the Imam's office until noon. At noon I came home. My wife's niece Nosrat and her children had come. We had no lunch; we got it from outside. In the evening, I spoke on the phone with the President and discussed important issues we have - including Friday prayers.
