Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 23, 1983

I slept after sahur and prayer. At seven in the morning, I went to the Majlis. Before the [start of the] open session, I read the reports. The UN delegation's report on the destruction caused by the war has been given to the Secretary-General and apparently is favorable to Iran. The text should be seen; apparently the UN wants to win Iran's trust; because we have always expressed distrust of the UN's actions and described it as dependent and under influence.

The internal disputes in Palestine have reached a critical stage; armed clashes that indicate [Yasser] Arafat and his group are retreating. Before the order, I recalled in a few sentences the late [Mostafa] Maleki, the [congregational] imam of Hemmat Mosque. The plan concerning the limits of private ownership was raised.

It contained nothing new beyond the established generalities; it was approved.

Before noon, I came to my office. I spoke with Messrs. [Morteza] Ketirayi [member of the Majlis presiding board's administrative staff] and Qeysar about the amendment to the Majlis employees' bill. At noon, Salmani came to the office for corrections. Mr. Engineer Hossein Salari came and complained about Mr. Ebrahimi's dismissal by Mr. Gharazi [Minister of Oil]. Mr. [Seyyed Mahmoud] Alavi, representative of Lar, came and complained about the Ministry of Health for not issuing a construction permit for a hospital - whose budget is being provided by Iranians living in the southern Gulf [states] - and about the governor of Lar.

In the afternoon, a group of members of the Office for Strengthening Unity came and consulted about a student seminar of Islamic groups from around the world in Iran, as a prelude to a «global Islamic student organization». I gave my views and they were recorded. Mr. [Ghorbanali] Dori [Najafabadi] called from Isfahan and spoke about the progress of the work [to resolve the disputes among Isfahan officials] and its obstacles. He asked me to go to Isfahan for the Seventh of Tir ceremony. Mr. [Morteza] Alviri [representative of Damavand] came and reported on the situation of the Mobarakeh Steel office in Italy; he said the situation had improved. He complained about Mr. [Seyyed Taghi] Khamoshi, who had spoken against him in Damavand. The wife of Mr. Taher Ahmadzadeh came and complained about his detention. I asked about his charges; they said his case was serious: passport forgery, contact with the Mojahedin, insulting and distorting history in his writings, etc. I said, if you want help to be provided, they must request a pardon. [Mr. Mohammad Ali Khosravi] representative of Miandoab came and complained about the Friday prayer leader. Dr. [Hadi] Manafi [Minister of Health] came with his deputies. They spoke about the health plan and its priority over treatment and asked for help. They criticized the Medical Council for granting privileges to non-Hezbollah doctors. They also complained about Dr. [Abbas] Sheibani [President of the University of Tehran]; for this reason and because of taking over the Soviet hospital from the Ministry of Health, based on the Prime Minister's decree - which was not lawful - I too criticized their rigid برخوردها, including in connection with the «Lamerd» and «Ashkanan» hospitals. I stayed at the Majlis for iftar and came home at ten at night. Hamid and Saeed Lahouti had also come from Ahvaz and Gonbad and gave some information about the front and the armed forces.
