Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 22, 1982

At 7:30 AM, the open session of the Majlis began. I spoke in support of the Imam's statements regarding the priority of the war front with Iraq and in response to Saddam's remarks. Two bills were passed. Due to drained batteries in the control room, the loudspeakers and microphones kept cutting in and out, so a recess was called prematurely to have them fixed. We had many spectators from various organizations, and I spoke to them in two separate groups after the session.

At noon, Mr. [Seyed Mostafa] Mohaghegh Damad, head of the General Inspection Organization, came and provided a report on his activities, expressing dissatisfaction with the weaknesses of the Supreme Judicial Council.

In the afternoon, I attended a meeting with a group of representatives where we discussed the situation on the fronts and the reasons for sending aid to Lebanon. They mentioned that the majority of Majlis representatives and the public atmosphere were concerned about the impact of Iraq's peace-seeking maneuvers and external pressure, fearing that a premature ceasefire might be accepted under the pretext of Ramadan. They also relayed that Mr. Montazeri reportedly said officials had "smelled dollars" and wanted to end the war. I replied that Ayatollah Montazeri was aware of the Imam's view and decision to continue the war, making it unlikely he would say such a thing. Uninformed individuals might have made such statements, but dollars are not involved at all. Their core position is that a mutually agreed-upon committee should investigate and determine the aggressor before compensation is discussed, and the outcome of that is clear.

A group of seminary students from Qom, Mashhad, and Ahvaz came regarding propaganda for the June 28 tragedy and the bombing of the Islamic Republican Party headquarters; I spoke to them and provided direction for their activities.

The Friday Prayer Leader of Genaveh and several local officials visited, speaking about the people's poverty alongside their dedication to the Islamic Republic and the Revolution. I addressed them as well. Representatives from the party's local branches came with questions, which I answered; it was a good meeting.

I attended the Supreme Defense Council meeting, where decisions were made on several issues. The Imam stated that we should not launch any attacks during these ten days when Iraq claims to be withdrawing, nor should we send anyone to Lebanon for the time being. Decisions were made regarding taking delivery of the naval ship *Kharg*—purchased from Britain by the former regime—as well as purchasing radar systems, repairing existing radars, and expanding air defense capabilities.

I returned home at night. My mother had also come to our house. We had a light dinner and went to bed early to wake up for the pre-dawn meal of the first day of Ramadan.
