Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 1, 1985

Together with Mr. [Ayatollah] Khamenei, Mr. [Mousavi] Ardabili and Engineer Mousavi, we went to visit the Imam. We presented the situation of the IRGC and the army, the IRGC's proposals regarding the war and the readiness of [Colonel] Sayad [Shirazi] for the operation.

Expressing his opinion on the letter of the commander of the army, the Imam said that trust usually weakens when resources are gathered and one should be careful not to weaken their trust. The Imam ordered me to tell them to put the necessary forces at the disposal of [Colonel Sayad Shirazi], the commander of the ground forces, and to obey without excuse.

I communicated the Imam's order to Mr. [Mohsen] Rezaei by phone. In the afternoon, he and [Mr. Yahya] Rahim Safavi came and presented plans for the future. They are not satisfied with the Imam's new order. The commander of the air force informed that today we had several air attacks on Iraq and one of our planes was shot, but it reached the Dezful base.

In the evening, the supervisory council [of the broadcasting organization] had a meeting. We revised the rules for broadcasting news to foreign guests. Mr. Shujai brought tapes of Bani Sadr's conversations - which are full of lies. At 10:30, Mr. Mohsen Rezaei informed that a missile had been launched into Baghdad and that the Radio and Television building had been targeted. I told the air force to be ready to defend. Forty minutes later, Iraqi planes attacked Tehran and attacked again at 2:30 in the morning, but they dropped the bombs outside Tehran and fled.
