Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – February 8, 1983

I stayed at home until the afternoon. I spent the time resting, reading, and writing my memoirs. I called the front. Mr. [Reza] Seifollahi, the IRGC intelligence chief, said they had carried out a small operation last night to link the Najaf and Karbala headquarters and eliminate gaps the enemy had created in our forces. Effat is supposed to go to Ahmad Agha's house and cooperate with other women who are packing things for the front.

In the afternoon I went to Parliament, and Effat went to visit Mr. Khamenei's wife. At Parliament I met with Dr. Hadi and the group overseeing the Supreme Council of the Iraqi [Islamic] Revolution, who spoke about their divisions and inactivity. We consulted about the nature of their work and Iraq's future.

I met with Mr. [Mohammad Mehdi] Rabbani Amlashi, who still complained about his dismissal and that of others from the Supreme Judicial Council, and we discussed the matter. I said that many reports on several issues had reached the Imam through various channels and had upset him, and after his doubts were resolved, he made amends. Mr. [Mohammad] Gharazi complained that the committee following up on the Imam's decree had prosecuted two district governors he had appointed during his tenure as governor of Khuzestan, and he was concerned. He also said that after the offensive began, the oil situation had improved.

At night we held a meeting of the Supreme Defense Council. The reports indicated that the objectives of the first phase had not been achieved and that operations had stalled. Decisions were made regarding Iraqi prisoners of war, getting the ADS4 radars operational despite the Air Force's lack of cooperation, and efforts to bring ships to Imam Port. President Mr. [Khamenei] rebuked two commanders during the meeting for their negativity. Late at night I returned home. I called the front and learned that there would be no attack tonight either and that we have problems; we have lost about one hundred and twenty men as prisoners.
