Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – February 17, 1986

At eight in the morning I went to visit the Imam. I gave a report on the victories of Wal-Fajr Eight operation and put forward four assumptions and four ways about the future of the war. 1- Continuation of the war until the fall of Iraq's Baath [Party] and the formation of a popular government. 2- Accepting the fall of Saddam while preserving Baath and taking losses. 3- Accepting the fall of Saddam with the arrival of a non-Baathist government with losses. The imam did not accept the fourth assumption and said to discuss and negotiate on the other three assumptions.

I did not go to the public meeting. From today, the budget [for the year] 65 has been proposed. In my office, I started doing the backlogs and organizing the war affairs. Mr. Rouhani informed that equipping the bombs has started. In today's front, there were enemy ambushes and air strikes from both sides. The tanks were repulsed and seven enemy planes were shot down.

Mr. Zamanian came in the afternoon and raised his problems with some of the leaders of Nahavand. Mr. Naroi, the representative, came to me and asked for help to find the traces of his kidnapped brother. In the evening, a group of heads of Hajj caravans came and complained about the decision of Hajj and Awqaf regarding the cancellation of privileges of clerics and caravans over sixty years old. Mr. [Kazim] Akrami [Minister of Education] came and requested for education.

At night, the heads of the three powers were my guests. I gave a report on the war situation and we discussed the future of the war. We did not reach a definite conclusion based on the assumptions of Imam's service. Most of the comments revolved around the middle two assumptions. I came home at night.
