Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – February 14, 1984

I went to the assembly early in the morning. We had a public meeting. The intervening forces in Lebanon have been defeated and are retreating, and the Muslims have captured the west of Beirut. This is one of the shameful historical failures of America and Israel and one of the important conquests of the Islamic people.

I had several meetings in my office at noon; Among them, they came from the IRGC and the Prime Minister and gave suggestions about Islamic, revolutionary and intelligence activities and their expectations for their work.

In the afternoon, I participated in the meeting of Friday imams of Tehran province in [Ayatollah] Mr. Khamenei's office and gave them a detailed analytical discussion about the war. Then, in the presence of Mr. Mohsen Rezaei [commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] and the president, we had a meeting until the evening about future operations, and the rest of the work was postponed until 9:00 p.m. I went back to my office to make some appointments. [Dr. Hadi Manafi] Minister of Health came and had some questions about the doctors of the private sector; They disagree with the [organization] of the medical system. The medical system gives privileges to doctors and the Ministry of Health is strict. He also expressed his satisfaction with the work of Dr. Hamid Lahoti - who is taking a course outside the center in Rafsanjan - and said that his 15-year-old son went to the front and about the construction of emergency facilities in the Imam's residence - which he agreed to at the insistence of Dr. Arefi. A group of officials from the school of foreign students - which is managed by Mr. Seyyed Mohammad Taghi Madrasi - came. They gave a report on their situation. There are about five hundred people and they spend half a million tomans a month. They wanted help for residence permit, tuition, travel, etc. Officials of urban land also came and raised the problem that has occurred to them due to the opposition of the Guardian Council to the interpretation of Article 9. Then we went to the meeting of the headquarters of the future operation and determined the time of the operation.

Iraqi planes attacked six cities and left about 100 martyrs and 1000 injured, and the presidency announced that from now on, except for the blessed cities [including Karbala, Najaf, Kazimin and Samarra], the rest of the Iraqi cities will be attacked in response to the evils of the Iraqi Baath.
