Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – August 30, 1982

After the prayer and a walk in the courtyard of the house, I wrote down the backlog of memories and listened to the seven o'clock news.

The Minister of Defense came, and we consulted about the new board of directors of the Army's Military Industries Organization and the Hojjatieh Society. I spoke by phone with the Air Force commander and asked for an explanation about why the Hawk missiles had not been active on Friday—when an Iraqi aircraft had violated Tehran's airspace. He said the aircraft had been flying at a very high altitude, beyond the Hawk's operational range, and that at that altitude only the SAM-2 and the F-14 could be used. We also discussed upcoming operations in Iraq.

They reported from Kharg that the enemy had fired three missiles, which had landed in the desert. At four in the afternoon, I went to Parliament. I met with Sunni clerics from Paveh and Oramanat. They complained about [Ahmad] Mufti Zadeh and the leftists and were satisfied with the government. The Sharia judge of Amol also came and spoke about the danger of counterrevolutionary harassment in the forest and requested greater attention to this issue.

I met with the Minister of Education and his deputies and directors-general and gave a speech. A group from the IRGC's public relations department came and spoke about the Army's lack of political and ideological effort. Dr. Rahnama came and brought a proposal for parts [for sale] for warplanes, Chieftain tanks, and so on from a company, and I referred him to the Ministry of Defense. Then I went to the Shian Garden—the venue for the seminar of IRGC commanders from across the country. I spoke to them for an hour. At eleven at night, exhausted, I returned home.
