Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – August 24, 1985

I used to study at home until eleven o'clock in the morning. I feel a little tired, feel tired and have pain in my joints and bones like a cold. I went to the Imam's office and negotiated with Mr. [Mirhossein] Mousavi regarding the issue of the future cabinet, considering Mr. [Ayatollah] Khamenei's disapproval, but no result was obtained. The imam repeated his previous words that they do not consider the change of government to be advisable and they are not ready to issue an order in this regard and they consider it sufficient to express their opinion.

Regarding recommending the Guardian Council to reconsider the interpretation of the constitution, which deems it necessary to introduce the Prime Minister after the re-election of the President, so that the government will remain on its own, the Imam said that we do not want this heresy to be introduced, which would weaken the Guardian Council. I said sedition will occur. They said that we should talk to Mr. [Ayatollah] Khamenei and convince him, and at the same time they said that Mr. [Ayatollah] Khamenei is harmful to himself, and they informed about the arrival of Mr. [Ayatollah] Khamenei's letter and their own answer to the same themes.

Ayatollah Khamenei did not want to be re-nominated, and he accepted with our insistence and Imam's request, and at the same time they said that they have expressed their opinion about the cabinet and now they have evidence, but they do not want to violate Imam's opinion.

In the evening, Messrs. Shamkhani and Rahim Safavi came and talked about future operations and the needs of the IRGC. One of the refugees named Mr. Nowrozi came and complained to [Colonel Hoshang Sediq] the commander of the air force. I have a little fever and fell asleep after taking painkillers.
