Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – August 19, 1982

I studied the reports until half past seven. The public session began. An objection was raised to the delay of the impeachment, which I answered. With the information the representatives had from the Imam, they agreed. The councils were on the agenda. During the recess, I spoke to the training-department camps that had come to the Majlis, and at noon to a group of cadres from the Republican Party. [Eslami], who have come to Tehran for a training course, and the selected Basij students who are on a camp in Tehran.

A group from the Ministry of Petroleum came and explained the situation in Kharg Island, complaining about the negligence of the Air Force. In the evening, the representative of Minab came and spoke about the Friday Imams and the poor performance of the provincial executive officials.

A group of Lebanese resistance clerics came and had suggestions regarding the type and quality of Iranian aid to the Lebanese resistance, stating that they do not wish to work with the Amal Organisation. They are a good, pure force.

Mr Mohsen Rafighdoost came and was concerned about the dismissal of Mr [Asadollah] Lajevardi. I said that Mr Lajevardi must take action to rectify the problems. The Imam has appointed three people to observe and report on the state of the prisons. The President was also insistent. I read the reports until ten o'clock and then came home. [Ayatollah Mohammad] Hashemi, who had gone to Spain for eye treatment, returned satisfied and was at our house. He said that the Spanish people's understanding of the issues surrounding the Iranian Revolution has improved.
