Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – April 7, 1985

After prayer and brief exercise, I went to the assembly. It is not an important issue in the reports. [Mr. Xavier Perez Decoyar] The Secretary General of the United Nations, who was not supposed to come to Iran, has suddenly announced that he is coming.

The first meeting of the parliament was held in the new year. Before the order, I talked about Saddam's new adventures. After breathing, I went to my office when Ayatollah Khamenei and Sayad [Shirazi] came.

Sayad explained the timing and maneuvers of future operations. We criticized the delay in the work, but we had to accept it. Mr. Velayati asked me by phone to meet with the Secretary General of the United Nations - which is his request - and I accepted. As Iraq announced that it would not hit the cities temporarily, the artillery was ordered not to hit Iraqi cities anymore. In the afternoon, Salmani came for correction.

In the evening, I met with [Mr. Xavier Pérez Decoyar] the Secretary General of the United Nations and explained our positions and opinions in detail. I think it was a good meeting. I told him that we will not pass the punishment of the aggressor and we are ready to stop any action against the international regulations that we do in response to Iraq's repeated crimes as retaliation.

I read the reports in my office until eight o'clock at night and did the work. Mr. Ahmad Agha and Mr. Mousavi Ardabili asked for an explanation about the results of the meeting by phone. Dr. Velayati explained the results of the negotiations of the delegation to Russia. They have promised to refrain from delivering long-range missiles to Baghdad. They have a desire to develop relations with us, they have complained about our lack of appropriate treatment during the cessation of arms shipments to Iraq since 1980, and they insist on ending the war. The trade relations between the two countries will also develop.
