Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – April 13, 1991

I reached my office at half past seven in the morning. In the reports, the issue of Iraqi refugees and the provision of a safe zone in Iraqi territory for them is at the top. [Mr. Abdulrahman Mohamed Saeed], the new ambassador of Sudan, and [Mr. Nour al-Din al-Hamdani], the new ambassador of Tunisia, came to present credentials. I got grams with both; Tunisians are ashamed.

[Mr. Bilal Saleh Zawawi], the Palestinian ambassador came. He apologized for the past positions of the Palestine Liberation Organization and severely criticized Saddam's dangerous mistakes in attacking Iran and Kuwait. He sought help to solve their financial and political problems; I consoled and promised to help.

[Mr. Mohdian], our new ambassador came to Czechoslovakia. He consulted to improve the level of cooperation. I told Mr. [Syderreza] Zavareh over the phone that there would be no problem with the loan fund of Rafsanjan. Timsar [Hossein] Hosni Saadi, the commander of the Nazaja [Army Ground Force] came. He told about the situation of the army and requested for reconstruction and participation in construction projects.

In the evening, the Supreme Council of National Security had a meeting. A decision was made about the safe zone for Iraqi refugees with the help of the United Nations and the issue of Iraqi airplanes and propaganda, etc. After breaking the fast, Mr. [Ali] Larijani and Mr. [Akbar] Turkan asked for their current affairs. I worked in my office until half past eight and came home. I spoke with Ayatollah Khamenei on the phone. They have stomach pain and asked for a doctor.
