Akbar Hashemi's Memoirs - April 21, 2001

Hashemi’s account of the report from Sheikh Abbasali Alizadeh and Sheikh Ali Mobasheri regarding the accusations against national-religious activists under the title of overthrowing or transforming the regime.

Continuation of the review of the draft for the general policies of the regime in the area of national security.

Hashemi's account of the report from Sheikh Abbasali Alizadeh and Sheikh Ali Mobasheri regarding the accusations against national-religious activists under the title of overthrowing or transforming the regime contains very important historical points. Especially Ali Larijani's account, which refers to Sheikh Ali Mobasheri's special indications regarding the issuance of the statement from the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, and the reaction of Seyed Mohammad Khatami, as well as the very minimal support from the Expediency Discernment Council on this issue.

Continuation of consultations and advice from Hossein Marashi Aliabadi, Hashemi’s brother-in-law, to prevent the order of the Organization for Registration of Deeds and Properties to the official notaries to regulate their financial affairs.

Political-electoral consultative meeting with Mahmoud Vaezi (which was mistakenly written as Seyed Mahmoud by the editor) and Mohammad Bagher Nobakht.

Meeting with Admiral Abbas Mohtaj, the then-commander of the Navy, and a report on the actions of this force.

In the session of the [Expediency Discernment Council], several more articles of the general policies of national security were approved, and at the request of the members, Mr. [Abbasali] Alizadeh, the head of Tehran’s judiciary, and Mr. [Ali] Mobasheri, the head of the Revolutionary Court, came from the judiciary and provided explanations regarding the program to overthrow or transform the regime by the national-religious activists. It wasn’t much more than what had been stated in last night's statement from the Revolutionary Court, including their connections with [Seyed Abolhassan] Banisadr [former President], the Monafeqin [Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization], and the U.S., as well as inciting students and the press, efforts to discredit the regime and its officials, and portraying the religious government as ineffective, with the aim of changing the Constitution to remove the concept of the Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist [Velayat-e Faqih], and examples of their confessions. Today, the statement from the Revolutionary Court has been widely reflected in the media.

Mr. [Ali] Larijani, [head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting], came and said that Mr. Mobasheri was not prepared to issue the statement and had to be forced, but today in the session of the Council, he spoke firmly. Mr. [Seyed Mohammad] Khatami, [the President], who was sitting next to me, was upset; he had previously trusted Mr. Mobasheri. Mr. [Seyed Mahmoud] Hashemi-Shahroudi, [head of the judiciary], requested that a supportive statement be issued from the Council, which was done but in a very subdued manner, and the court was asked to act based on justice and prudence.

In the afternoon, Hossein Marashi [my brother-in-law, head of Notary Public Office No. 337 in Tehran] came. He complained about the pressure and threats from the [National] Organization for the Registration of Deeds [and Properties] on notary offices.

Mr. [Seyed Mahmoud] Vaezi, [Deputy at the Strategic Research Center of the Expediency Discernment Council], and [Mohammad Bagher] Nobakht, [representative of Rasht and Secretary-General of the Moderation and Development Party], came to consult about nominating a candidate from the Moderation and Development Party for the [presidential] elections, but they themselves were opposed. I told them to bring it up in the party meeting and act based on the party's vote.

Mr. General [Abbas] Mohtaj, commander of the Navy, came and gave a report on the state of the force, including the plan to build military vessels of the Peykan class for the Caspian Sea, the completion of the Chabahar port pier, and the dredging program of its canal to allow submarines to pass through.

In world news, the summit of 34 countries of the Americas in Quebec, Canada, focused on economic globalization and the creation of a free trade area for all countries. Large-scale protests by opponents caused long delays in the summit, disrupted the program, and led to clashes between the people and the police.
