Report from Alireza Zakani on the Ninth National Congress of Distinguished Students and Clerics of the Basij

Complete Daily Record:

Mr. Seyyed Reza Zavarei, a member of the Guardian Council, visited to seek advice regarding his candidacy for the presidency. I mentioned that given the requirement to resign from the Guardian Council, it is necessary for him to consult with its members. He believes he can attract public attention to his plans during a televised debate with other candidates. Mohammad Taqi, our executive assistant in Bahraman, came by. He is ill and is preparing to travel to Karbala.

Mr. Sadegh Zibakalam, a professor at Tehran University, came for the third part of his interview and mentioned that he has written a book titled "Hashemi and Khordad," which addresses criticisms and responses related to me during the parliamentary elections. In the afternoon, Professor Mohammad Nabi Naimati, a neurosurgeon at the University of Bonn and head of Iranian specialists residing in Germany, visited. He reported that 2,400 Iranians are members of their organization and are considering establishing a hospital in Kish as an international facility with the best standards. I encouraged him regarding his plans to visit Kish for further assessment.

Mr. Seyyed Hossein Mousavian came and expressed that members of the Moderation and Development Party do not take the party seriously and have not fulfilled their commitments to the newspaper. They are unwilling to be active in the elections, and Mr. Mohammad Baqer Nobakht and Mr. Akbar Torkan have also declined candidacy. Some members suggested that the party should support Mr. Seyyed Mohammad Khatami, who did not receive votes. He proposed that Dr. Hassan Rouhani would be a good candidate for First Vice President. He described Dr. Rouhani's trip to Pakistan as successful.

Distinguished students and clerics participating in the Ninth National Congress of Distinguished Students and Clerics of the Basij came by. Mr. Alireza Zakani, the head of the Basij Students Organization, reported that 40 students and 15 clerics were selected from among 4,000 volunteers. I delivered an extensive speech to them on the importance of commitment and expertise, emphasizing the need for greater scientific effort.
