Akbar Hashemi's Memoirs - August 28, 2002

The European Union's foreign policy chief and former NATO secretary general came. He wanted to know my opinion on Iran's economic and political policies. I explained, saying that the Iranian revolution was based on the cooperation of the people from the beginning and will continue to be so in the future, and that election slogans must be distinguished from the main policy of the revolution.

Mr. Seyyed Ahmad Mousavi, [Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs], came. He gave a report on the situation in Lebanon and Hezbollah and asked me to participate in the gathering of the non-governmental friendship associations of the countries.

Dr. [Alireza] Bahrampour, [CEO of the Telecommunications Company], and Hamed Marashi came. They reported on new programs and tenders for the development of telecommunications and satellites, and consulted on returning to the university - due to the disturbances they are experiencing.

Engineer [Seyhadhi] Tabatabaei, the Deputy Minister of Agricultural Jihad, came. He gave a positive report on the profitability of the Ahvaz sugarcane project and said that it should be handed over to the banks.

The era of Javier Solana, the EU's foreign policy chief and former NATO secretary general, came. He wanted to know my opinion on Iran's economic and political policies; I explained, based on the policy of moderation and relying on the people and beliefs. I asked questions about the EU's actions, including inaction on Middle East issues and surrender to the US on the issue of the International Criminal Court and the environment, and they said about Iraq, the EU's policy is to pressure Iraq to cooperate with the UN on weapons of mass destruction, and to short-circuit the US on the issue of the court, with the aim of saving the court from it was destruction. He said that soon the EU population will double the US and the first power. Solana stated that Europe is sensitive to Iran's support for Hezbollah, Hamas and the Islamic Jihad organization; they are considered terrorists. I said, the Iranian Revolution was based on the cooperation of the people from the beginning, and it is the same in the future, and the election slogans should be distinguished from the main policy of the revolution.
