On September 4, 1990, Mehdi Akhavan Sales, the prominent contemporary poet of Iran, passed away.

Akhavan Sales, known by the pen name "M. Omid," was one of the most important figures in Persian poetry after Nima Youshij.

He blended the language and structure of classical poetry with the experiments of New Poetry, and his works, particularly in connection with the political and social atmosphere of Iran, have remained enduring in Persian literary memory. "Winter," "The End of the Shahnameh," and "From This Avesta" are among his most famous works.
