Deadly Buin Zahra earthquake

On the night of September 1, 1962, a powerful earthquake struck the Buin Zahra region and parts of southern Qazvin Province. The intensity of the earthquake was such that a large number of villages in the area were completely or largely destroyed.

According to historical estimates, thousands of people lost their lives in this earthquake, and tens of thousands lost their homes. Many of the victims lived in mud-brick houses that offered little resistance to the severe tremors.

The Buin Zahra earthquake is considered one of the great natural disasters of Iran in the 20th century, and the relief operations that followed became one of the largest relief operations of that period in Iran.
