The beginning of the Tabriz street wars and the Khayabani uprising.

On September 9, 1920, street fighting began in Tabriz between the Cossack forces and the followers of Sheikh Mohammad Khiyabani.

These clashes were in fact the culmination of an uprising that had started in March of the same year with liberationist and anti-colonial goals against the central government in Tehran. The Cossack forces, commanded by Brigadier General Hashemi and under orders from Mokhber al-Saltaneh, the governor of Azerbaijan, attacked the headquarters of the uprising on September 13, and shot and killed Sheikh Mohammad Khiyabani at his hideout in a friend's house.

Khiyabani's death marked the official end of an uprising that is recognized as one of the most important regional movements against Qajar despotism and foreign influence.
