On September 9, 1951, the British government, in response to the nationalization of Iran's oil industry by the government of Mohammad Mossadegh, imposed an embargo on Iran. This embargo, which included a ban on Iranian oil purchases and extensive economic pressures, was part of London's international campaign to weaken Mossadegh's government and restore oil control to the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.

This event was part of a chain of developments that ultimately led to the coup d'état of August 19, 1953, and the fall of Mossadegh's government.
