The Extinction of the Saffarid Dynasty

On the 16th of Shahrivar, 389 AH (September 7, 1002 AD), the remnants of the Saffarid dynasty in Sistan were overthrown by Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni, and this dynasty became extinct.

Alp-Tegin, one of the Samanid commanders, became dissatisfied with the Samanid government late in his life and went to the city of Ghazni. With his successors, he established a government in this city that came to be known as the Ghaznavid dynasty. The Ghaznavids went from Ghazni to fight against the idolaters.

Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni, the greatest ruler of the Ghaznavids, extended his domain beyond Ghazni; he marched on Sistan and overthrew the remnants of the Saffarids, thus marking the official end of this dynasty in the historical calendar.
